Legaw Leboack, however, hadnÕt forgotten the dot
on the horizon which was the SeaSwan. Intently
he stared at it, Aral at his side. ÒWonder whoÕs
aboard,Ó said Legaw Leboack. ÒDonÕt know,Ó said
Aral MacTawnler. ÒWell, weÕll find out soon
enough!Ó
Gilltiph sighed, leaning against the cold stone
wall of his prison cell. Suddendly the guard
banged his spearbutt against the oaken door.
ÒHey, weasel! A beast Ôere tÕ see you!ÕÕ Gilltiph
was surprised. Who would want to see him?
Then the door opened and Fripnose entered! The
door closed behind him. ÒFripnose!Ó whispered
Gilltiph. ÒWhat are you doing here!Ó Fripnose
grinned. ÕÓÕElping you escape! I heard of your
capture, and came here to visit you.Ó Gilltiph felt
hope. ÒAlright! But first: How many guards are
outside my door?Ó asked Gilltiph. ÒOne,Ó
answered Fripnose. ÒHow do we get out?Ó
Fripsnose smiled at that question. ÒIÕve got an
ideaÉÓ
About two minutes later Fripnose popped his
head out of the door. ÒGuard, thereÕs something
the matter with the prisoner!Ó The guard hurried
in, and sure enough, there was Gilltiph, hopping
up and down, making strange noises, and
grinning insanely. ÒHe must be mad!Ó said the
guard. It was the last thing he ever said. Fripnose
stood over him, a bloody knife in his hand.
Gilltiph stopped acting strangely. ÒNow,Ó said
Fripnose, Òyou change into the guardÕs stuff, leave
him in here, go outside and guard the door, make
sure you keep that helmet on, IÕll leave, and when
the watch changes, then you escape!Ó He then
added, ÒFortunately for us, the guard was a
weasel.Ó Gilltiph nodded. He changed into the
guardÕs uniform, and put on the helmet. Then he
asked, ÒDo I pass as the guard?Ó ÒYes,Ó said
Fripnose. Then Gilltiph took his place outside the
door, closing and locking it, leaving the dead
guard inside. Then Fripnose left. When the watch
changed, instead of going to the barracks, Gilltiph
went out of the Royal Palace, into the night, where
Fripnose waited for him. Then they slipped off,
planning GoldorranÕs death.
